Top Ten Pet Poisons of 2009 |
1. Human Medications - As in prior years, human medications is the number 1 pet poison. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as pain killers, cold medications, antidepressants, and dietary supppliments most often are the worst. Pets will snatch pill vials from counters or gobble up medications that accidentally fall to the floor. That's why it is essential to keep meds tucked away safely. 2. Insecticides - One of the most common incidents involve the misuse of tick and flea products such as applying the wrong kind to the wrong species. Always check with your vet on what products to use. 3. People Food - People food like grapes, raisins, avocado and products containing xylitol, like gum, can seriously disable our pets. One of the worst offenders is chocolate - because it contains large amounts of methylxanthines, which if ingested in a large amount, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, even death. 4. Plants - Some very common houseplants are also very toxic. Varieties include, azalea, rhodoendron,sago oalm, lilies, and schefflera. Lilies are especially toxic to cats and can cause life threatening kidney failure even in small amounts. 5. Veterinary Medications - Sometimes medications intended for pets amy often be misapplied or improperly dispensed by well meaning pet parents. Some of these medications included anti-inflammatory drugs, heartworm meds, de-wormers, antibiotics and vaccines. 6. Rodenticides - Many baits used to attract rodents contain inactive ingredients that are attractive to pets as well. Ingestions can lead to potentially life-threatening problems for pets including bleeding, seizures or kidney damage. 7. Household Cleaners - Many people know that cleaning supplies can be toxic to our pets but some do not take measures to prevent thier pets from agents such as bleach, detergents, and disinfectants. These products when inhaled by our pets, can cause serious gastrointestinal distress and can cause irritation to the respiratory tract. 8. Heavy Metals - It's not loud music - it is metals such as lead, zinc, and mercury that are toxic. Lead is especially toxic and pets are exposed to it through paint chips, linoleum, and lead dust, especially in older homes. 9. Garden Products - There are certain types of fertilizer and garden products that can cause severe gastric upset and possible gastrointestinal obstructions. Be sure to read the labels for any warnings. 10. Chemical Hazards - Ethykene glycol antifreeze, paint thinner, drain cleaners, pool/spa chemicals all area substantial danger for pets. Substances in this group can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression, respiratory difficulties and chemical burns to our furry friends. Prevention is truly the key to avoiding accidental exposure.
